Enamels or Other Paints for Fusing??
Submitted by Magic Glass Lady on Thu, 10/02/2008 - 03:26.
What type of paints or enamels or etc could I use when fusing 96 COE? What works well between glass? What works on the top surface? Are there different tempetures to use with different products?? Where are these products available?

I use Ferro enamels on 90. I am pretty sure you would have success on 96. They are available directly from Ferro or from Warmglass Studio's. I think Nancy Weisser will be carrying them in DC.
Best way I ahve found is to prefuse the enamel before capping it.

painting with glass powders
Have you tried to use glass powders to paint? Use System 96 glass powders and thin them with Aloe Vera and water and you can paint with them. I just published a new video on you tube about painting with glass powders. http://www.youtube.com/user/glasspetra

Thanks Petra for the reply. No I have not tried using the glass powders but I have lots of them. Where do you purchase aloe vera?? Is it in a pure form????? What is the ratio of water to aloe??
I did check out YTube but it was on how to make a mold and is there talking with it as I could not bring up a sound. It was a very professional demo ---- great video --- just silent.
Thanks,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXR1M-X_akU please try this link. You can get Aloe in any place where they sell sun lotion - it is good against sun burn. You mix it one part powder, one part aloe and some clean water to thin it down. You can also buy fritz Spritz or Liquid Stringer Medium from your glass supplier.
When you click on my You Tube account name in the upper right corner you will find all my videos.

glass powder
yes I mean the glass very fine glass frit that looks and feels like fine powder not like granules. When you fire it try to be there at the final fusing temperature and if necessary give it a little more time. I was watching my piece until it looked all glossy.

Powdered Frit to paint with!!
Petra this is the greatest news as the other enamles are ultra $$$$$ and when I laid in my first supplies I went wild about frit. I find I do not use it as much as I thought I would and have never cracked open a powder. This will be beyond fun and excitment!!!! Thanks!~!

Powdered frit to paint with
Magic Glass lady,
Petra is right on about the glass frit painting. I've been playing with it and in my classes as well. We made our own Glass line paint by following the directions in Richard LaLonde's new book. If you do a search for his name and look inside the book there is a PDF file with a couple of pages that explain it. He woon't let you save the file or print it, but just read it. We found the cellulose at Seattle pottery supply and it was very cheap. In small plastic bottle with pointy lids we were able to use it and saved big compared to the commercial products.Try this as well, I think you will be happy with the results and cost. Don

Richard La Londe's book
Richard's book is a wonderful book and well worth owning it. Great inspirations if you are working in detailed images. Lot's of information and how to techniques on surface decoration. While me and my books are more minimalistic designs and form oriented. I guess this is why Kaiser Lee Board had to find me, otherwise I would not have continued with glass fusing. Yesterday I worked on a new blog to make my videos more accessible. The slide show is the first time I'm showing a collection of my Art in Glass on the Internet. http://glassfusingprojects.blogspot.com/

Thompson Enamels
I have used Thompson enamels for years. They come in powdered format and are sifted like glass powders but the colors are much more saturated.
Here are some examples of my work with Thompson:
Keep in mind that when you pain with glass powder you are using the exact same material as sheet glass and that very thin layers tend not to have much color in them -- think about a balloon that is inflated until the latex gets so thin that the color fades.

Can the frit powder/aloe Vera mixture be painted on one surface and capped with a clear glass and fired all at one time?? Could one do three layers with painting between them and fired a one time???

Glassartguy,
Thanks for the suggestion of getting Richard LaLonde's new book. I just ordered it. I have admired his work and your suggestion of buying the book was nudge enough as I have been dragging my feet in ordering it.

Glassline Paints
Hello!
I've recently started using Glassline glass paints with great results. It's very versatile... you can do very graphic line drawings or use them like watercolors. While I do occasionally get bubbles if I sandwich the image between layers of glass, there are several techniques listed on this discussion board that may overcome that issue. (http://www.warmglass.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=26081&view=previous)
I've used the glass on top of and between glass layers with great results... it's very fun stuff! I found my paints on eBay but if you google Glassline paints you'll find them in various sources.
For example:

addicted to painting glass
I really enjoyed Petra's video :)
I use about 4-5 different enamels on my work. I will try just about all of them LOL I hate waiting for them to dry so I pop them in my toaster over to dry (designated just for my studio use) 200 degrees for about 10 -15 min. This also helps reduce bubbles with glass line paints some times the bubbles are from mositure.

Glassline paints are pretty
Glassline paints are pretty great and they are compatible with 96 and 90. You can get um in lots of colors including copper and gold. I bought the pen set and the paints and so far I love them.
Capping Frit Paint
You can cap it but the liquid causes bubbles. Technically you should wait for it to dry before you cap, unless you like the bubbled look. I made a pendant that I was too impatient to wait for and it came out looking like an explosion. Kinda cool, but still ruined.
